Verisurf Software Joins DMSC to Advance QIF and Open Digital Metrology Standards

Verisurf Software, a leader in model-based metrology software, has announced that it has joined the Digital Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC), reinforcing the company’s commitment to advancing open standards for digital metrology, interoperability and the manufacturing digital thread.

The DMSC is an ANSI-accredited standards developing organization responsible for the development, maintenance and support of the Quality Information Framework (QIF), an open XML-based framework for communicating manufacturing quality information across the product lifecycle. QIF 3.0 is published as ISO 23952:2020.

As a DMSC member, Verisurf participates in industry collaboration supporting the continued development and adoption of QIF and related digital metrology standards. The company is particularly committed to advancing the use of QIF Persistent Identifiers (QPIDs), which provide universally unique identifiers for maintaining the identity and traceability of product and quality information as it moves between systems and throughout the product lifecycle.

“Manufacturing is becoming increasingly digital and connected, but realizing the full value of the digital thread requires open standards that allow information to move reliably between people, software and measurement systems,” said Ernie Husted, president of Verisurf Software. “Joining the DMSC gives us an opportunity to contribute directly to that effort. We strongly support QIF and the use of persistent identifiers because the/y help preserve the integrity and traceability of quality requirements from design through manufacturing and inspection. This is essential to achieving a practical, standards-based digital thread.”

QIF supports the structured exchange of quality information, including product geometry and product manufacturing information (PMI), measurement plans, measurement resources, inspection results, and statistical information. Because the framework is based on open standards, manufacturers can exchange quality information between different software applications and measurement technologies without relying exclusively on proprietary data formats.

Persistent identification is an increasingly important part of this process. QIF Persistent Identifiers use universally unique identifiers (UUIDs) to maintain associations with information such as product items, features, characteristics, measurement plans, resources, and inspection results. Maintaining those associations helps preserve traceability as information moves between engineering, manufacturing and quality systems.

This capability becomes increasingly important as manufacturers implement Model-Based Definition (MBD), Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) and automated inspection processes. Instead of recreating or manually translating quality requirements as data moves downstream, persistent identification provides a mechanism for maintaining connections to the original product and quality requirements.

“We are proud to welcome Verisurf Software to DMSC. Their longstanding commitment to model-based metrology has established Verisurf as a thought leader in advancing digital manufacturing,” said Curtis Brown, president of DMSC. “Verisurf recognized early that Model-Based Definition (MBD) could serve as a critical connection between design intent and inspection. Their integration with Mastercam further reinforces that vision by extending the value of the authoritative CAD model and its embedded Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) into manufacturing and quality verification processes. We look forward to Verisurf’s contributions to advancing open standards, improving interoperability, and strengthening the digital thread.”

For manufacturers in highly regulated, quality-critical industries, including aerospace, defense, medical, and other advanced manufacturing sectors, this level of traceability can reduce manual data translation, minimize error opportunities, and increase confidence in the integrity of manufacturing quality information.

Verisurf has long supported an open and device-independent approach to metrology. Its model-based software platform operates on an integrated CAD foundation and supports a broad range of measurement technologies, including coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), portable measuring arms, laser trackers, scanners and other digital measurement devices.

QIF support extends this interoperability beyond measurement hardware to manufacturing quality data, helping create a continuous digital thread that connects design requirements with inspection planning, measurement execution, results, and downstream quality systems.

“Open standards become more valuable as more manufacturers, software developers, equipment providers and OEMs participate in their development and implementation,” Husted said. “Our goal is to help move digital metrology forward in a way that gives manufacturers choice while maintaining a reliable, traceable source of quality information throughout the product lifecycle.”

Through its DMSC membership, Verisurf collaborates with other manufacturers, OEMs, software developers, metrology technology providers, and industry experts working to advance interoperability and standardized product quality data exchange.

The DMSC develops and supports standards intended to improve interoperability among engineering, manufacturing, quality, and metrology systems. Its work includes QIF, the Model-Based Characteristics (MBC) standard, and the Dimensional Measuring Interface Standard (DMIS).
