PMT Expands Portable Metrology Portfolio with SMARTSCAN Handheld Scanner

Chinese portable inspection equipment supplier, PMT Technologies, has expanded its portfolio of metrology solutions with the introduction of the SMARTSCAN handheld 3D scanner, a lightweight laser scanning system designed for on-site industrial measurement, quality inspection, reverse engineering and digital manufacturing workflows.

Developed for use across manufacturing environments, SMARTSCAN combines portability with high-speed data acquisition, enabling users to capture complex geometries without moving large or fixed components to a dedicated metrology laboratory. The scanner is intended for applications including automotive, aerospace, energy, medical device manufacturing and heritage preservation.

A key feature of the new system is its lightweight design. Weighing approximately 530 g (excluding the battery), SMARTSCAN is designed to reduce operator fatigue during extended scanning sessions while allowing measurements to be performed directly on the production floor, assembly line or in field environments. The device also features a low power consumption of 4.8 W, which PMT says helps minimise thermal drift and maintain long-term measurement stability.

SMARTSCAN employs multiple blue laser scanning modes to accommodate a range of inspection tasks. A 51-line cross-laser mode is intended for rapid acquisition of large surface areas, while a 7-line parallel laser mode captures fine surface details on precision components. A single-line laser mode is designed for inspecting deep holes, slots and recessed features that are typically difficult to access with conventional scanning techniques. According to PMT, the scanner delivers capture rates of up to 5.5 million measurements per second with a maximum scan area of 700 × 600 mm.

The system also incorporates an integrated RGB camera for capturing surface texture and colour information, enabling the generation of realistic digital models alongside dimensional measurement data. Acquired scan data can be processed using PMT’s proprietary SkyForm software for mesh generation and optimisation before being transferred to PMT Inspect for dimensional inspection, GD&T evaluation and automated reporting.

For manufacturers seeking higher levels of automation, SMARTSCAN can be integrated with industrial robots and photogrammetry systems, supporting automated inspection cells as well as manual measurement workflows. The company says this flexibility allows users to scale from single-part inspection through to high-volume production quality control.

PMT positions SMARTSCAN as part of its broader strategy to provide portable metrology solutions that bring precision measurement closer to the manufacturing process. The launch complements the company’s existing range of portable measuring arms, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and industrial metrology software, extending its offering for manufacturers pursuing faster inspection cycles and increased digitalisation on the shop floor.
