Bruker Alicona Upgrades FocusX to Five Axes With Real3DUnitX

Earlier this year, Bruker Alicona, a leading manufacturer of optical metrology solutions, introduced the FocusX—a groundbreaking device that has transformed quality assurance. What sets it apart is its Advanced Focus-Variation technology, which enables precise measurement of micro-geometries and surface roughness on smooth and even reflective surfaces using a single sensor. This technology is housed in a compact unit, allowing for versatile, on-site use in production environments. Initially celebrated for its adaptability, the FocusX has now received an additional versatility upgrade just nine months after its release.

For many years, the rotation unit has been one of Bruker Alicona’s key unique selling points. By combining 3D data from multiple perspectives, it enables 360° measurements, allowing users to perform thorough inspections using CAD files. Initially announced in January under the tagline “Access All Areas,” the first FocusX with five-axis capability is now set to be delivered to customers in December 2024.

Shape Symmetry or Free Form – Strengths of Real3DUnitX

The Real3DUnitX is designed to be valuable for any sample requiring a comprehensive analysis of geometry and surface properties. At the FocusX market launch, Urban Muraus, Managing Director of Bruker Alicona, generated excitement for its applications: “The FocusX is a smart, all-in-one solution, significantly enhanced by the rotation unit. I envision numerous uses in the field of cutting tools, as well as in electronics quality control, where it enables detailed inspection of plugs, pins, and connectors.” Muraus also sees high potential for the FocusX in medical technology, enabling complete measurements of components such as screws and surgical instruments with the Real3DUnitX. Additionally, the production of turned parts benefits immensely from the device’s rotation and tilting capabilities. In spring 2024, a MetMaX software update introduced the ‘Round Tool Alignment’ feature to automate edge preparation measurements, which will now be accessible in FocusX through the rotation unit.

5 Axes Motion Provides 360° View

The FocusX has a travel range of 100 x 100 x 100 mm on the x, y and z axes. The Real3DUnitX, which drives the motorized rotation and tilting, gives the product two additional axes.

Pierre Baumann, Product Manager of the Real3DUnitX at Bruker Alicona, on the advantages: “The FocusX was developed to integrate measurement directly into production. It is fast, precise and robust. The measurement volume is more than sufficient for most applications. However, the Real3DUnitX gives the system maximum versatility. In production, the digital twin of components is a decisive factor that enables exact planning, efficient use of resources and early detection of problems.”

The user benefit is obvious: the Real3DUnitX enables complete automation in the MetMaX operator software: all ythe user has to do is click on the region of interest on the CAD and the software automatically knows how to rotate, tilt and move the sample to reach the point. This way, the FocusX measures exactly where the user wants it.

The FocusX offers the following user benefits:

Limitless Applications: FocusX is the most versatile measuring system in its class.

One Click Roughness: Fast, easy and ISO-compliant roughness measurement – even without expert knowledge

Speed in Focus: FocusX is the fastest measuring device on the market in its precision class.

See every detail, measure every detail: No detail is too small for FocusX to display, inspect and measure in high resolution.

The Answer to Miniaturization: FocusX embraces miniaturization and provides its best performance for small and high-precision parts.

Unmatched value: FocusX delivers category-leading measurement performance in a smart package.
