3D Laser Scanning Sensor Transforms a Machine Tool into a Full-Scale Inspection Platform

Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence has introduced an updated version of its M & H LS-R-100 wireless machine tool laser scanner, unveiled at the AMB expo in Stuttgart. The system’s ability to capture high-density point clouds is impressive, realizing a true metrology breakthrough. The scanner fundamentally turns a standard machine tool into an active, closed-loop inspection platform without ever requiring the part to be leave the machine.

Redefining In-Process Manufacturing

Traditionally, quality control has been treated as a separate post-machining operation. Components must be unclamped, transported to a coordinate measuring machine (CMM), and inspected – introducing heavy bottlenecks and handling delays.

By integrating the LS-R-100 directly into the manufacturing workflow, Hexagon is championing the shift toward closed-loop production. Because components can be comprehensively measured while they remain fixed in the machine bed, operators can identify and correct dimensional errors immediately. This eliminates the unproductive downtime associated with removing and pst machining inspection activities.

Seamless Automation and Wireless Integration

The LS-R-100 is engineered for total autonomy within harsh machining environments:

High-Density Data Acquisition: Capable of generating rich point clouds at speeds of up to 768,000 points per second, the scanner maps complex geometries, freeform surfaces, and intricate features with metrology-grade accuracy.

Automated Tool-Magazine Exchange: The scanner integrates cleanly with the machine’s tool magazine, allowing it to be swapped in and out of the spindle automatically just like a regular cutting tool – requiring zero manual intervention.

Wireless Flexibility: Utilizing robust wireless communication, the system operates unhindered inside complex machine architectures.

Ultimately, Hexagon’s latest evolution bridges the gap between machining and metrology, empowering manufacturers to maximize throughput, minimize production disruption, and catch tolerances issues earlier than ever before.
