Sodick Expands Laser AM Capabilities with Prima Additive Acquisition
Sodick Co., Ltd., headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, has finalized its acquisition of Prima Additive from the Prima Industrie Group. The acquired company will now operate under the new brand name Prima Additive by Sodick, continuing to base its operations at its Italian headquarters.
The acquisition marks a strategic move by Sodick to strengthen and expand its portfolio of laser-based manufacturing technologies. With a renewed brand identity and direction, Prima Additive by Sodick aims to scale its Additive Manufacturing (AM) solutions for industrial production, focusing on advanced laser technologies for both additive manufacturing and material processing.
“Since Prima Additive was founded, we’ve explored our technological direction and global positioning. In recent years, we’ve seen strong growth in product development and international reach—confirming our ambition to deliver advanced, automated laser solutions for industrial use. Sodick is the ideal partner to support this next phase of growth, offering industrial expertise and robust backing. We remain proud of our roots with Prima Industrie and look forward to what lies ahead” commented Paolo Calefati, CEO of Prima Additive by Sodick on the transition.
Originally launched as a brand in 2018, Prima Additive began its R&D journey in 2015 within Prima Industrie as part of the European Borealis project. The company currently delivers turnkey solutions in Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED) technologies—two critical pillars of industrial additive manufacturing.
As part of its technological evolution, Prima Additive by Sodick has also expanded into advanced laser processes, including remote laser welding for e-mobility and laser surface treatments for tooling and industrial components. The company remains actively involved in European R&D initiatives aimed at advancing laser technologies and promoting sustainable manufacturing practices.
This acquisition positions Sodick to play a more prominent role in the industrial AM sector, bringing enhanced capability and innovation to manufacturers seeking high-performance, scalable solutions in additive and laser-based production.
