Mahr Expands CNC Surface Measurement with MarSurf Modular Evo

Mahr has introduced the MarSurf CNC modular Evo, an entry-level CNC measuring station designed to provide a step-by-step route from manual or semi-automated surface measurement to automated inspection.

The new system is intended to bridge the gap between conventional shop-floor measurement and larger, fully automated inline inspection systems. By automating recurring surface measurement tasks, manufacturers can improve measurement repeatability, reduce operator influence and shorten inspection cycle times without making the investment required for a high-end automated installation.

The MarSurf CNC modular Evo is designed for use directly on the production floor, with a user interface intended to support operators carrying out standardized inspection routines. Mahr says this approach can reduce the workload on conventional metrology resources while bringing measurement closer to the point of manufacture.

CNC Measurement for More Complex Parts

The system is intended for applications involving workpieces with multiple measurement locations, different spatial orientations and rotationally symmetric components that need to be measured at different angular positions.

Additional software modules support pallet measurements, allowing manufacturers to standardize recurring inspection procedures and increase the number of components that can be inspected within a given production cycle.

The modular Evo builds on the architecture of Mahr’s existing MarSurf CNC modular measuring stations. Positioning axes provide 200 mm of travel, while the system can be configured with different combinations of linear and rotary axes. Existing feed devices, accessories and workpiece holders can also be incorporated, providing continuity for users already working with the MarSurf platform.

A new 280 mm feed axis expands the measurement volume and provides additional flexibility for higher-volume applications.

Preconfigured for Simpler Deployment

Mahr is also offering the MarSurf CNC modular Evo as a fixed, factory-preconfigured measuring station. This is intended to simplify system selection and planning by providing a standardized configuration rather than requiring the individual assembly and coordination of system components.

Configurations are available with one linear axis; one linear and one rotary axis; or two linear axes combined with a rotary axis.

The MarControl control unit is provided as standard, supporting operation of the system in production environments.

A Gradual Route to Automated Surface Inspection

The significance of the MarSurf CNC modular Evo is less about replacing high-end automated inspection systems than providing manufacturers with an intermediate step toward automation.

For repetitive surface roughness inspection, automated measurement sequences can provide more consistent measurement conditions and reduce variation associated with different operators. At the same time, automation can allow inspection resources to handle recurring measurement tasks with less manual intervention.

For manufacturers beginning to automate quality inspection, this type of modular CNC system can provide a practical way to introduce automated surface measurement while retaining existing accessories and established measurement practices.

Mahr’s approach therefore positions the MarSurf CNC modular Evo as a scalable solution between manual measurement and fully automated production inspection, allowing manufacturers to increase automation as their requirements develop.
