Edmund Optics Acquires Pioneer In Ultrasonic-Assisted Machining

Edmund Optics, a leading global manufacturer and supplier of optical components and assemblies, has announced the acquisition of son-x. The Aachen, Germany based high-tech company, a 2011 spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute, is considered a pioneer in the field of ultrasonic-assisted manufacturing of precision optics.

With this strategic acquisition, Edmund Optics strengthens its position as a reliable partner for innovative solutions in the global optics and photonics industry. By integrating son-x’s groundbreaking technology and expertise in the field of ultrasonic-assisted diamond turning, new possibilities for the manufacturing of precision optics are opened up. This enables the company to machine highly complex surfaces with multiple axes (up to five axes) – from micro components with a diameter of just 1 mm to large-format workpieces of up to 1 meter.

“We are pleased to welcome son-x to the Edmund Optics family,” says Marisa Edmund, CEO and Chairman of the Board. “This partnership is another important step in advancing our mission to become a leading address for high-precision optical and photonic solutions. Together with son-x, we will offer our customers worldwide even more innovation and added value.”

Dr. Olaf Dambon, co-founder and CEO of son-x, adds: “The merger with Edmund Optics opens an exciting new chapter for son-x. With Edmund Optics’ global reach and investment plans, we can drive our innovations faster and offer our customers worldwide even more precision and efficiency.”

The acquisition of son-x underscores Edmund Optics’ long-term vision of expanding its innovation leadership in precision manufacturing while also better meeting the needs of customers and partners worldwide.
