A Decade of Metrology News as Measurement Transforms Manufacturing

Launched in October 2016, Metrology News was established to provide a dedicated, global news service for an industry becoming increasingly important to advanced manufacturing. Ten years on, that mission remains as relevant as ever.

Metrology News was founded on a recognition that industrial metrology was becoming increasingly central to the future of manufacturing, yet the sector was not receiving the dedicated news coverage it deserved.

Manufacturing was becoming global, with technology developments, supply chains and production operations spanning continents. At the same time, advances in automation, digitalisation and precision engineering were raising the importance of measurement and inspection. Traditional quality control publications, often working to monthly publishing cycles, were not following the industry closely enough.

An online publication, serving a worldwide audience and reporting developments daily, was a natural response.

From the outset, Metrology News set out to become the pulse of the industrial metrology sector, reporting on the technologies, companies and applications shaping its future.

A Decade of Change

Over the past ten years, industrial metrology has evolved significantly. Three-dimensional scanning, industrial computed tomography, optical measurement and automated inspection have expanded manufacturing capabilities, while increasingly sophisticated software has transformed how measurement data is processed and used.

More recently, artificial intelligence, robotics and connected manufacturing systems have strengthened the relationship between measurement and production. Metrology is moving beyond simply verifying finished components towards enabling process optimisation, automation and closed-loop manufacturing.

These developments reinforce the importance of keeping pace with an industry whose influence extends well beyond traditional quality control. Metrology News has followed this evolution across technologies, applications and international markets, reflecting the increasingly close connections between metrology, manufacturing software, machine vision and industrial automation. More than 10,000 articles have been published over the past decade.

A significant milestone came in early 2026 with the launch of a dedicated Metrology News China website, extending the publication’s reach into one of the world’s most important manufacturing markets. The initiative reflects the increasingly global nature of industrial metrology and the importance of providing regional audiences with relevant industry news while maintaining an international perspective. It also reinforces the original vision behind Metrology News: to connect the global metrology community through timely reporting on the technologies and developments shaping the future of manufacturing.

The Next Decade

As manufacturing embraces artificial intelligence, digital twins and increasingly autonomous production, reliable measurement data will become even more important to product quality and manufacturing performance.

For Metrology News, the challenge and opportunity remain much as they were in 2016: to follow these developments closely, report the news as it happens and provide a global perspective on the technologies shaping industrial metrology. Ten years after its launch, the original vision remains unchanged. Metrology News will continue to serve its international readership with timely reporting on an industry that is playing an increasingly important role in the future of manufacturing.
