Ground-Breaking 3D Sensors For High-Precision Glass Inspection Launched

SmartRay has launched a new 3D sensor for glass inspection adding significant value to the production process through improved quality and accuracy.

The new ECCO 95.025G is an economic and compact sensor, developed to meet the challenges of scanning transparent and highly reflective surfaces. Historically, 3D glass scanning using laser triangulation was impossible due to laser light passing through the glass, and light reflection which can cause inconsistencies in the data. However, SmartRay has developed its sensor technology around advanced reflection filtering algorithms to improve repeatability and accuracy.

This new sensor joins the ECCO 95.015G in the ECCO 95+ glass series; both sensors are designed specifically to measure flat glass and specular surfaces. Using an optimized lens and optics, together with SmartRay’s advanced SmartX software optimization tools, the ECCO glass sensors deliver a high-accuracy, high-resolution, high-speed scanning solution. This allows manufacturers and machine builders measuring or inspecting glass and shiny surfaces, the opportunity to use 3D laser scanning to obtain superior 3D images of their products, ensuring consistent quality and correct dimensional specifications.

The ECCO 95.025G provides a larger 28.5mm field of view (mid-field) to inspect bigger parts or to reduce the number of required scans. Its brilliant blue laser delivers a typical lateral resolution between 13 and 14.5 µm, and a vertical resolution between 1.4 and 1.9 µm, and can create a 3D profile with up to 1920 points.

Clare Rathsack, Business Unit Manager – ECCO Sensors, SmartRay, said: “Our two ECCO 95+ models designed specifically for glass are game-changing, taking 3D glass scanning to the next level. Customers can now confidently measure flat glass surfaces, measure glass thickness and defect detection on the most challenging shiny surfaces. As well as improved accuracy, our ECCO sensors can be integrated with third-party vision software, enabling a cost-effective and completely customisable solution for any flat glass or specular surface.”
