RoboTwin Brings Virtual Reality To Factories

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan’s largest and one of the world’s leading high-tech applied research institutions, has announced the introduction of RoboTwin, a Metaverse Smart Factory Simulation Platform, at the CES 2024 exhibition.

RoboTwin creates a realistic VR simulation of a manufacturing factory based on real-world data. Developed by ITRI, RoboTwin adopts state-of-the-art AI and Sim2Real technologies to create a realistic simulation of a factory where engineers and operators can experience realistic and immersive manipulations and interactions via specifically designed user interfaces.

Engineers and operators wearing VR headsets can immerse themselves in the virtual factory, simulating production-line adjustments and performing tasks. With RoboTwin, operators can receive coaching to resolve issues during the manufacturing process from an engineer via teleoperation capability. In addition, RoboTwin can be extended to various applications including multi-agent collaboration from various sites, remote troubleshooting, and maintenance via teleoperation.

RoboTwin includes these technology breakthroughs and features:

Industrial metaverse: Users wearing VR devices can experience heightened immersion in the virtual factory, overcoming time and spatial limitations and enabling them to simulate and execute production-line adjustments while in operation.

Human-robot interactive simulation: RoboTwin creates a virtual factory environment based on real-world data, enabling remote maintenance, troubleshooting, and hardware deployment via the metaverse.

Customizable applications: RoboTwin can be customized for various applications including multi-agent collaboration from various sites, remote troubleshooting, and maintenance via teleoperation.

Leading Taiwanese manufacturers, China Steel Machinery Corporation and TECO Electric & Machinery Co., Ltd, have utilized RoboTwin to create virtual factories, enhancing efficiency in their production processes. RoboTwin also holds significant application potential in industries such as semiconductors, machining, and manufacturing.
