Precise Results Specifically For The Customers’ Needs

Requirements regarding measuring technology are constantly increasing in many areas. Precise and fast results are the basis for high-performing quality assurance, process optimization and production development. ZEISS CALYPSO is the universal software for applications in dimensional metrology. Geometric elements can be measured in an easy and reliable way.

Christoph Grieser, Head of Global Software Sales at ZEISS Industrial Quality Solutions, provides an insight into the proceedings behind the scenes of the well-established product.

ZEISS CALYPSO is a well-established tool in the market – what do you consider being the main benefits of the software?

Grieser: “CALYPSO is a comprehensive software providing many smart functionalities. CALYPSO is designed in such a way that the user doesn’t have to work through line of code; all of the tolerances and information are directly linked with the feature. In case of modifications or revisions during the measuring procedure, e.g. a modification of tolerances, these can be adapted automatically in the software. There is no need to go through the entire measurement plan step by step.

Also, many people do not know that ZEISS CALYPSO provides the possibility for semi-automatic generation of a measurement plan. From these data, it is possible to derive mini-plans. The user doesn’t have to reprogram these plans; instead, they can be derived from the original basic plan. Thus, we guarantee high flexibility and efficiency.”

And how does the software support its users in their daily challenges?

Grieser: “Usability is a main priority for us and for our customers: We focus on the challenges our customers have to face day by day. When developing ZEISS CALYPSO, we wanted to create a software for efficient, secure and fast processing of data volumes in an intelligent way.

Users can, for example, customize ZEISS CALYPSO specifically to their needs in order to ensure that production staff or less trained personnel know how to create a part or which step comes next. Thus, it is possible to provide a simple step-by-step guide to newly trained staff or even load the measuring device fully-automatically or start the measuring task e.g. via a barcode.”

In CALYPSO, do we see further progresses towards automation?

Grieser: “The next level, I think, is the dynamization of the measurement plan. In general, a measurement plan determines the regular inspection of defined features. With ZEISS CALYPSO, you can customize sampling of stable or critical features. In combination with ZEISS PiWeb, such features can be identified, and with ZEISS CALYPSO, it is possible to customize samplings of interest. In the long term, this increases security and efficiency. Depending on the stability of the processes, users thus can determine in which intensity they have to measure their parts.”

Not everyone has been working with inspection software for years: How does ZEISS support users who might be less familiar with it?

Grieser: “For such cases, ZEISS CALYPSO provides default measuring strategies. The so-called “cookbook” contains predefined strategies for common measuring tasks. These are a good start to become familiar with a measuring task. Our goal is to increase efficiency and reduce potential error sources. We want to achieve an integrated system supporting the user in an optimized way.”

What are the new functionalities CALYPSO users can look forward to this year?

Grieser: “This year, we focus on performance-related functionalities. Together with the users, we will extend the ZEISS CALYPSO scope of functions. One important element, for example, are adaptations for ensuring standard-compliant measurement according to new ASME provisions.”

ZEISS is committed to continuously develop their software products and thus offer optimum support to customers. What does that mean for ZEISS CALYPSO?

Grieser: “Increased efficiency combined with flexibility and reliability is the challenge our customers have to face day by day. We will always continue to support them in mastering this challenge. To be able to do so, we need to continuously develop and optimize our software. Additionally, new applications permanently generate the need for new functionalities, which we integrate in our software. We have a clear goal: to continue being a reliable partner to our customers.”
