What Future Coordinate Measuring Machines?

The Coordinate Measuring Machine has been around for a very long time with the first machines introduced to the market by DEA and Ferranti back in the early 1960’s. These early CMMs were manually operated with ‘hard probing’, eventually migrating to computer controlled CNC units with touch-trigger probes. CMM touch-trigger probe ..

Robot Metrology Speeds up Final Inspection of Complex Aerospace Assemblies

Rolls-Royce in Barnoldswick has a long history of using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) for the final inspection of jet engine fabricated assemblies. Order book production rate increases necessitated the need to make a disruptive step-change in inspection methods without increasing the overall production footprint. Project goals were not only to reduce …

Optical CMM Measures Small Cast Parts Automatically

At the recent UK GOM workshop, “3D Metrology in Casting and Foundry Processes”, it demonstrated the GOM ATOS ScanPort desktop Optical Coordinate Measuring Machine capable of measuring small parts up to 200mm in diameter. ATOS ScanPort, comprising three motorized axis (rotation, swivel and linear) and three manual axis, can be utilized …

Correlation Free Measuring – A Game Changer For In-Line Manufacturing?

Faster, more precise, more cost-effective: inline production is constantly evolving. But not every innovation can revolutionize the entire process like “correlation free measurement.” Dr. Kai-Udo Modrich, Managing Director of Carl Zeiss Automated Inspection GmbH, explains the rules of the game which change and the advantages that are created for the …

What Price a Used CMM?

With an estimated 150,000 Coordinate measuring machines installed globally its inevitable that many find their way into the used machinery market. Buying a used ‘as-is’ CMM at auction or from a traditional used machinery dealer can ‘snag’ a bargain but at what risk and cost. A safer alternative purchase is a …
