Intelligence in Quality Sensing
The chairs of ‘Production Metrology and Quality Management’ and ‘Information Management in Mechanical Engineering’ are to become ‘Intelligence in Quality Sensing’, or WZL | IQS for short.
The new name underlines the completion of a strategic realignment, which includes the merger of the two original chairs. In this way, the identity of the two original chairs will be further developed with a view to the production of tomorrow. Research, teaching and industrial cooperation formats at the chair will thus be set up for the future.
“In both English and German, the new name stands for the interdisciplinary work in the research areas of Information Management, Sustainable Quality and Sensing & Robotics, in which we network data, people and technologies as systems to shape the production of the future – digital, sustainable and resilient,” says Professor Robert Schmitt, holder of the Chair.
The chair continues to be anchored in the WZL as a production technology institute and is complemented by the ‘Production Quality and Metrology’ department at the Fraunhofer IPT. The chair is also active in several centers, for example in the field of assembly, on the RWTH Aachen Campus.
A total of 110 employees and over 100 students work together in the team in the key areas of Data Intelligence, Assembly Automation, Intelligent Metrology, Sustainable Organizations, Quality Intelligence and Socio-Technical Systems. The volume of third-party funding of approx. 8 million euros, over 100 publications per year and a laboratory area of 1600 m² including a measuring room reflect the innovative strength and the internationally outstanding conditions for the technological implementation of research results. The team is also involved in several major projects, including the Internet of Production Cluster of Excellence, the European Digital Innovation Hub Rhineland, the AI Service Center WestAI and the establishment of the National Research Data Infrastructure for Engineering Sciences NFDI4Ing.
