Zivid Launches High-Performance 3D Vision for Large-Scale Depalletizing and Bin-Picking

Zivid has announced the release of its latest industrial 3D camera, the Zivid 3 XL250, engineered to deliver fast, accurate, and reliable 3D vision for large-scale automation applications such as depalletizing in logistics and bin-picking in manufacturing.

Building on the proven Zivid 2+ R Series, the new Zivid 3 platform brings enhanced point cloud fidelity, faster capture times, and superior environmental robustness. Capable of capturing full pallets or large bins in under 500 milliseconds, the XL250 enables robots to handle mixed-SKU pallets up to 2.5 meters high and workspaces up to 4.5 meters away – with consistent millimeter-level accuracy.

Exceptional Vision for Large Robot Cells

Designed for stationary mounting and large working volumes, the Zivid 3 XL250 offers a 2.5 m² field of view, giving robots the visual coverage needed to manipulate full pallets, large boxes, and deep bins in a single shot.

The camera combines 8-megapixel RGB and 3D sensing, producing synchronized 2D images, depth maps, and point clouds for every capture. With less than 0.2% trueness error, it provides the precision required for robots to pick the right item the first time – every time.

This 3D camera allows us to detect items within a few millimeters. We can handle items successfully without fail, pushing the boundary beyond 99.9% performance,” said Floris Gaisser, Computer Vision Team Lead at Mujin, a leader in robotics automation.

The Zivid 3 XL250 allows robots to “see everything and do anything – from anywhere,” making it ideal for high-speed depalletizing, truck unloading, and large-bin picking tasks that demand accuracy, speed, and reliability.

Blue Laser Light for True Industrial Environments

A standout innovation in the Zivid 3 XL250 is its eye-safe blue laser light source, which offers exceptional ambient light suppression and imaging consistency in environments exposed to daylight or strong artificial lighting.

Warehousing and logistics operations often place depalletizing cells close to loading bay doors, where lighting and temperature can change dramatically throughout the day. The XL250’s blue laser maintains image quality and point cloud completeness even under direct sunlight, ensuring reliable detection and picking performance regardless of ambient conditions.

Stable Calibration Across Temperature Fluctuations

A key innovation is Zivid’s calibration stability system, designed to maintain measurement accuracy under rapid temperature shifts – a common challenge in palletizing and depalletizing areas.

As loading bay doors open and close, ambient temperatures can vary by double digits within minutes. The Zivid 3 XL250 maintains calibration integrity under these conditions, ensuring consistent accuracy and completeness of 3D data even as environmental conditions fluctuate.

Combined with advanced structured light technology and multi-exposure 3D HDR imaging, the XL250 delivers clean, correct, and complete point clouds of even the most challenging objects – from glossy metal components to shrink-wrapped water bottles.

Unified 2D and 3D Vision Simplifies Robot Integration

By combining multiple vision modalities in a single sensor, the Zivid 3 XL250 eliminates the need for separate 2D cameras, lighting domes, or auxiliary sensors. The integrated 2D + 3D vision provides synchronized images and point clouds that align perfectly at the pixel level, simplifying robot vision programming and AI training workflows.

This all-in-one approach reduces the bill of materials, simplifies integration, and improves reliability by removing points of failure in the vision system. The camera outputs multiple data formats, including point clouds, depth maps, surface normals, and RGB imagery, all captured in a single exposure cycle.

For AI-driven applications, the consistent and stable input data from Zivid 3 allows machine learning models to perform with greater accuracy and robustness, even when lighting or distance conditions change.

Simple Installation and Seamless Upgrade Path

Ease of integration is central to the Zivid 3 design philosophy. The XL250 includes a quick-mount system, robust industrial accessories, and streamlined calibration tools to ensure rapid deployment and minimal downtime.

Zivid’s software suite provides direct compatibility with leading robot and automation frameworks, offering intuitive setup and configuration options that reduce engineering time. Whether integrating into a new cell or upgrading from existing Zivid cameras, users benefit from a unified software ecosystem and consistent imaging results across the Zivid product line.

With its long-range accuracy, high-speed capture, and robust performance in dynamic environments, the Zivid 3 XL250 sets a new benchmark for large-volume 3D vision in industrial automation.

Whether tackling mixed-SKU depalletizing, unloading trucks, or automating large-bin picking in manufacturing plants, the XL250 provides the speed, precision, and resilience needed to enable the next generation of intelligent, vision-guided robots.
