Wireless Handheld Scanner Offers Onboard Inspection Capability

Chinese manufacturer SHINING 3D Metrology has announced the release of its FreeScan Omni, a wireless 3D scanner featuring onboard inspection functionality aimed at supporting traceable, on-site quality control in industrial environments.

The FreeScan Omni combines 3D data acquisition, processing, and inspection within a single handheld device. At its core is SHINING 3D Inspect, a PTB-certified inspection module that enables automated dimensional analysis and reporting based on configurable templates. This integrated approach allows inspection tasks to be carried out directly on the production floor without the need for external computing hardware.

FreeScan Omni features include:

On-Scanner Inspection: The device supports direct scan-to-inspect operation. With predefined templates and an integrated touchscreen interface, operators can capture and evaluate part geometry in real time, helping ensure consistent reporting between production teams.

Standalone Wireless Configuration: All data capture and processing take place on the device itself. The FreeScan Omni operates fully wirelessly, with detachable batteries that allow continuous operation. A Smart Dock serves as both charging base and Wi-Fi communication hub.

Certified Inspection Module: The built-in PTB-certified SHINING 3D Inspect software provides validated dimensional evaluation and traceable measurement results.

Multi-Mode Scanning: The scanner integrates blue laser and infrared (IR) light sources to accommodate different surface finishes and materials. A 93-laser-line mode supports high-speed scanning, while an IR mode enables marker-free operation when required.

The FreeScan Omni has been developed in response to growing demand for portable metrology tools capable of performing rapid, in-process inspection. By merging data acquisition and analysis in a single instrument, the system is positioned for use in production lines, assembly validation, and maintenance environments where mobility and traceability are essential.
