Optical Lens Delivers High-Resolution Performance for Factory Automation and Machine Vision Systems

Edmund Optics has expanded its TECHSPEC HP Series Fixed Focal Length Lenses with the introduction of a new 6.5mm focal length, extending the series’ high-resolution imaging performance to machine vision applications that require shorter working distances and wider angular fields of view.

Designed specifically for factory automation and precision inspection, the TECHSPEC HP Series supports imaging systems where resolving fine detail is essential for inspection accuracy and reliable dimensional measurement. The new 6.5mm lens maintains the core performance characteristics of the HP Series, delivering superior resolution to support demanding tasks such as small defect detection, surface inspection, and high-precision dimensional analysis.

Optimized for sensors up to 1.1 inches, the 6.5mm lens enables detailed imaging across larger fields of view, helping system designers meet performance targets in compact or space-constrained environments. This makes the lens well suited for modern automated inspection systems where high resolution must be maintained despite tighter mechanical constraints.

The TECHSPEC HP Series lenses are designed and manufactured in house, ensuring consistent optical performance across multiple focal lengths. This approach allows engineers and system integrators to maintain imaging quality as system geometries change, simplifying design updates and reducing validation time. The addition of the 6.5mm focal length further expands this flexibility, providing additional options for applications requiring shorter working distances or wider coverage without sacrificing resolution.

Complementing advances in optical hardware, Keysight’s Optical Design Environment (ODE) continues to support imaging system development through intelligent predictive optical design and analysis tools. These include CODE V for imaging systems design, LightTools for illumination design, LucidShape for automotive lighting applications, ImSym for imaging systems virtual prototyping, and RSoft photonic device tools for rigorous electromagnetic simulation of photonic and optoelectronic devices. Together, these software platforms enable engineers to model, optimize, and validate optical system performance earlier in the design process.

The new 6.5mm TECHSPEC HP Series lens supports rapid integration into production-ready factory automation and machine vision systems. The expansion of the HP Series reflects ongoing industry demand for high-resolution, flexible optical solutions that enable accurate measurement and inspection in increasingly compact and high-throughput manufacturing environments.
