Leuze Introduces Compact Code Reader for High-Speed Industrial Traceability

Leuze has expanded its sensor portfolio with the introduction of the DCR 100i series, a compact industrial code reader engineered for reliable 1D, 2D, and direct part marking (DPM) code detection. Designed to operate across variable working distances and at high process speeds, the new series addresses the growing demands of tracking, traceability, and quality control in modern industrial production environments.

Whether used on printed circuit boards, assemblies, or fast-moving packaging lines, industrial applications increasingly require sensors capable of consistently detecting bar codes under challenging conditions. The DCR 100i meets these requirements through a high-resolution 1.3-megapixel CMOS imager, delivering precise and dependable code reading even in dynamic production settings. Simple commissioning and intuitive software further enhance usability, reducing setup time and integration effort.

Leuze has equipped the DCR 100i with powerful decoding algorithms and flexible focus areas, enabling reliable detection of even small 1D and 2D codes at varying distances. With a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second, the code reader captures fast-moving objects with ease, supporting conveyor speeds of up to two meters per second.

The system is also optimized for DPM code reading, a critical requirement in electronics manufacturing and other industries where codes are permanently applied directly to components. In addition, the DCR 100i’s large field of view allows multiple codes to be read simultaneously, making it well suited for identifying grouped or complex packaging configurations.

Adjustable Focus for Maximum Flexibility

To accommodate different working distances, code sizes, and surface characteristics, the DCR 100i features a manually adjustable focus. Four selectable focus ranges—from 40 millimeters up to 550 millimeters—ensure sharp imaging and high read rates across a wide variety of industrial applications. This flexibility enables system integrators and end users to deploy the same device in multiple scenarios with minimal hardware changes.

Fast Integration and Simple Commissioning

Commissioning the DCR 100i is designed to be straightforward and efficient. Users can configure the device directly on the sensor, thanks to integrated trigger and teach buttons. Automatic adjustment of exposure, illumination, and decoding parameters enables fast, error-free setup without the need for a PC.

For system integration, the DCR 100i offers Ethernet connectivity and supports common industrial communication protocols including Modbus and TCP/IP, along with an RS232 serial interface. This ensures seamless integration into a wide range of automation and control architectures.

Compact, Industrial-Grade Design

The DCR 100i is housed in a robust aluminum enclosure rated to IP64, providing reliable protection against dust and liquids in industrial environments. A durable glass cover safeguards the optics for long-term operation. Measuring just 44 Ă— 53 Ă— 29 millimeters, the compact design allows easy installation in space-constrained applications without compromising performance.
