Legal Merger Strengthens Bruker Alicona’s Role in Global Production Metrology
Bruker Alicona, a pioneer in high-resolution optical 3D metrology for production, has announced a significant step in its corporate development: the legal merger of Alicona Imaging GmbH with Bruker Austria. As of October 1, 2025, Bruker Austria GmbH becomes the unified legal entity, with its headquarters in Raaba/Graz, Austria.
Strong Signal for the Importance of Production Metrology
Importantly, this change is purely legal in nature: the Bruker Alicona brand will remain unchanged and will continue to stand for cutting-edge, high-precision metrology solutions made in Austria.
“This development is a strong signal – not just for our employees, but also for our customers and partners around the globe,” says Urban Muraus, General Manager at Bruker Alicona. “Becoming the headquarters of Bruker Austria highlights the exceptional work of our team and underlines how critical metrology has become in modern production environments.”
University Spin-off to Global Metrology Leader
The merger marks a new milestone in the success story of Bruker Alicona. Founded as a university spin-off in Graz, Austria, the company began in the early 2000s with a visionary focus: to develop a robust, optical alternative to tactile profilometry. This ambition gave rise to Focus-Variation, a then-unique optical measure ment technology that combined surface roughness and form measurement in a single system.
Over the years, Bruker Alicona has evolved from a small, research-driven startup into a global leader in optical 3D metrology for production environments. Its solutions are trusted by manufacturers in industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical device manufacturing, and precision engineering—anywhere dimensional accuracy and surface integrity are critical for performance and safety.
In 2018, the company joined the Bruker Group as part of a strategic expansion of Bruker’s Industrial Metrology Division. This integration allowed Bruker Alicona to scale its technologies globally, while continuing to innovate from its development hub in Raaba/Graz.
Today, Bruker Alicona stands for a growing portfolio of optical metrology solutions used in both manual and fully automated quality assurance workflows. With a deep commitment to accuracy, reliability, and usability, Bruker Alicona systems are increasingly integrated into automated production lines, machine tools, and robotic cells to enable closed-loop manufacturing and smart production.
Strategic Center for Bruker Austria
The merger also reinforces Bruker’s long-term commitment to Austria as a key site within its global structure. By consolidating all Austrian business activities under one legal entity and moving the headquarters of Bruker Austria GmbH to Raaba/Graz, the company highlights the strategic relevance of the site and its employees. The current staff of Bruker Austria, previously based in Vienna, will become part of the Raaba-based operations. This shift strengthens not only the local presence, but also the importance of production metrology within the Bruker portfolio. With increasing demand for process-integrated measurement solutions in modern manufacturing, the expertise concentrated at Bruker Alicona is playing a central role in shaping the future of industrial metrology.
