Comprehensive Scattered Light Product Portfolio Released By Mahr
Following the acquisition of OptoSurf GmbH in 2024, Mahr has expanded its product portfolio to include scattered light technology. With the implementation of the OptoSurf portfolio, Mahr is opening up new possibilities in the field of tribology. Customers thus receive a further plus in cutting-edge technology from the metrology manufacturer.
MarSurf3D Sensor OS 500: Whether for grinding or finishing machines, rollers, sheet steel or roller bearings, the OS 500 scattered light sensor can be integrated into machine control systems and measures exactly where it matters: directly inline. The device is extremely fast, low-maintenance, robust and precise. It is controlled by a PC and can evaluate roughness and waviness using the sensor software provided. The 8 kHz version of the OS 500 scattered light sensor is designed for large surface measurements such as rollers.
MarSurf3D OptoRack: Ball screw drives are used to convert rotary movements into longitudinal movements, for example in machine tools and steering systems. Particularly in the latter, efficiency, wear and possible noise development depend heavily on the surface quality of the ball tracks. This is where MarSurf3D OptoRack really comes into its own: The device was specially developed for process monitoring during the grinding and finishing of racks and ball screws. Thanks to a swivel axis, the sensor can measure the roughness and waviness separately on paths to the right and left of the pressure point of the raceways at any point on the spindle.
MarSurf3D OptoShaft: Finished bearing seats, which rotate in the gearbox or motor as needle bearings, place high demands on surface quality: Even the smallest waviness with amplitudes < 0.05 μm lead to intolerable noise. The cause of the waviness is chatter marks on the bearing seat, which occur sporadically during the grinding process and were not completely eliminated after finishing. With the MarSurf3D OptoShaft, the processes involved in grinding and finishing the bearing seats can be monitored in real time. Thanks to the extremely robust and precise scattered light sensor, the measuring device can be used directly next to the production machine.
MarSurf3D OptoWorm: In electric power steering, the worm gearbox is of particular importance. This is because the demands on the surface of the screw flanks are extraordinarily high due to the force transmitted to the screw wheel. The MarSurf3D OptoWorm measuring device has been specially developed for process monitoring in the fine machining of worm gears. It allows the measurement of the entire functional area of the left and right flanks. Due to the extremely robust and at the same time precise scattered light sensor, the measuring device can be used directly next to the production machine.
Manuel Hüsken, CEO of the Carl Mahr Group, explains: “For Mahr, the addition of OptoSurf scattered light technology is an ideal complement to the existing systems. This is because it allows surface characteristics to be measured extremely accurately down to the nanometer range in harsh manufacturing environments, robustly and extremely quickly.”
