Universal Machine Tool Industry 4.0 Interface Showcased at EMO

Integrated communication is the linchpin of Industry 4.0 processes. This works when all systems and machines involved worldwide speak the same language. OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) is one such standard that is now also being integrated into the Klingelnberg machine tools.

Under the leadership of the Verein Deutscher Werkzeugmaschinenfabriken (VDW) an OPC UA information model for all types of machine tools has been created with umati (universal machine tool interface), which is promoted by the OPC Foundation with more than 470 members worldwide. The platform-independent communication standard OPC UA provides solutions for the central challenges of Industry 4.0, including top topics such as data security and standardized information exchange. As OPC UA is continuing to grow in importance and is regarded as a key technology for tomorrow’s production, Klingelnberg is gradually implementing this interface into its machines.

On the machine, an OPC UA server provides the data from the numerical control unit and the operating software developed by Klingelnberg. The goal is that customers can continue to rely on a sustainable and modern Industry 4.0 solution. As soon as machine are extended by with the interface, customers can benefit fully from the advantages of an open standard: umati simplifies the connection between Klingelnberg machines and the customer’s IT world. Industry 4.0 projects can thus be handled faster and more efficiently.

At the upcoming EMO Hannover 2019 exhibition, VDW will present a demonstration of the interface standard. Attendees can discover more about the project in Hall 9, Booth E24 and how data can be brought together centrally on a demonstration dashboard. Implementations of this interface will also be presented live at the Klingelnberg booth in Hall 26, Booth B110.
